GitHub
Set up automatic Hull reviews on GitHub pull requests.
Hull reviews GitHub pull requests through the HullConnect GitHub App. When a PR is opened or updated, the review agent analyzes the changes and posts its feedback on the pull request.
Code review is included on Starter and higher plans. See Code review.
Set up
Install the HullConnect GitHub App. On the Integrations page, open GitHub and install the app on the account or organization that owns your repositories. Choose all repositories or select the ones Hull may access. See Connect GitHub.
Configure the reviewer. Open Code Reviews (personal, or your organization's sidebar), turn on Enable AI Code Review, choose your model, style, focus areas and repositories, and click Save Configuration. See Settings.
Open a pull request. Hull reviews it automatically.
When reviews run
| Pull request event | Review |
|---|---|
| PR opened | Yes |
| New commits pushed | Yes |
| PR reopened | Yes |
| Draft marked ready for review | Yes |
| Draft PR opened or updated | Skipped |
| Opened by a bot account | Skipped while Skip pull requests from bots is on |
What you see on the pull request
- An 👀 reaction on the PR and a Hull Code Review check that shows the review is queued or in progress.
- Inline comments on specific lines, each with a severity and a suggested fix.
- A summary comment with the overall findings.
When you push new commits, Hull cancels the review of the older commit, starts a new one, and updates the existing summary comment instead of adding another.
Set a PR Gate Threshold in Code Reviews to make the check fail when the review finds issues at or above a severity, so you can require it in branch protection.
Fix findings with @hullcode-bot
Inline review comments end with a fix command. Reply @hullcode-bot fix it (or @hull fix) on a review comment, and Hull starts a cloud agent that pushes a scoped fix. This needs Fix PR Review Comments turned on under Auto fix, and the person asking must have write access to the repository.
Repository selection
- All repositories: every repository the HullConnect app can access is reviewed.
- Selected repositories: only the repositories you choose. Others aren't reviewed.
The repository list syncs from GitHub. To add a repository that's missing, give the HullConnect app access to it in GitHub, then refresh the list.
Troubleshooting
Reviews don't start.
- Check that the HullConnect app is installed and can access the repository.
- Check that Enable AI Code Review is on.
- If you use selected repositories, check the repository is selected.
- Make sure the PR isn't a draft, and wasn't opened by a bot while bot PRs are skipped.
A review failed. Open the review on the Code Reviews page to see the error. Check that you have AI allowance left on your plan.
HullConnect is missing access. In GitHub, open Settings > Applications > Installed GitHub Apps > HullConnect > Configure and update repository access. If Hull asks for new permissions, approve them there.
