Setup and installation

Common questions about installing, updating and signing in to Hull.

Which surface should I start with?

Start with Hull Desktop if you want one place to run and review sessions across projects. Use the CLI if you live in the terminal or want to script Hull, and the VS Code or JetBrains extension to work inside your editor. See Install.

Do I need the CLI to use Hull Desktop or the IDE extensions?

No. Hull Desktop and the IDE extensions include everything they need.

How do I update Hull?

  • Hull Desktop downloads updates in the background. Click Update in the sidebar to restart into the new version. See Install and update.
  • CLI: run hull upgrade, or npm update -g @hullcode/cli if you installed with npm.
  • VS Code and JetBrains update through the editor's extension or plugin manager.

The CLI crashes with "Illegal instruction"

Your CPU doesn't support AVX. Reinstall with the install script, which picks the baseline build for your machine:

curl -fsSL https://withhull.com/cli/install | bash

Sign-in doesn't complete

Make sure you finish the sign-in in the browser and, for the CLI and IDEs, enter the code exactly as shown. If the request times out, start sign-in again. See Sign in.

Where does Hull store its configuration?

In ~/.config/hull/ for global settings, and hull.jsonc or .hull/hull.jsonc in your project. See Settings.

Something else isn't working

See Troubleshooting, or email support@withhull.com.
