Context and mentions

How Hull finds the code it needs, and how to point it at specific files with @ mentions.

Hull finds most of the context it needs on its own. When you describe a task, it searches and reads your project with its tools (glob, grep, read, read-only shell commands and, when enabled, semantic search). You don't have to list every file.

When you already know which file matters, mention it with @. That saves Hull a search and makes sure the file is in front of it.

Mention files

Type @ in the composer to mention a file or folder. The + button also adds files and folders, and can attach a window so the agent sees what you see. See Your first session.

Tips

  • Describe the goal, not the path. Hull can find code by searching. Mention files when you know them, to save a step.
  • Keep the context focused. Mentioning a few relevant files works better than attaching everything.
  • Use project instructions for things Hull should always know. Put conventions and commands in AGENTS.md rather than repeating them in every message.
  • Files you exclude stay excluded. Hull respects .hullcodeignore.
