Commit messages
Generate a commit message from your changes, and customise how Hull writes them.
Hull can write a commit message from your changes. By default it follows Conventional Commits, and you can replace the instructions with your own conventions.
Generate a message
Use the Git actions button in a session and choose Commit, Commit & push or Commit, push & PR. Hull writes the commit message. See Review and ship.
Hull uses your staged changes. If nothing is staged, it uses all your current changes instead.
The default format is:
type(scope): description
bodywith types such as feat, fix, docs, refactor, test and chore. For example:
fix(api): handle race condition when fetching user data
Add error handling and retries so concurrent requests
no longer leave user data inconsistent.Customise the format
Open Settings › Commit Message (Desktop or VS Code) and write your own instructions. Hull saves them in the current project's config, so each repository can follow its own conventions.
Or set it in hull.jsonc:
{
"commit_message": {
"prompt": "Write concise conventional commits. Use the package name as the scope."
}
}Your prompt replaces the default instructions entirely, so include everything you want Hull to follow.
Tips
- Stage related changes together. One focused change produces a clearer message. Use
git add -pto stage part of a file. - Review before you commit. Add context Hull couldn't know, such as the issue number or why a change was needed.
